Trillium Book Awards Author Reading 2015

Lift Off

Let me say immediately that I am thrilled to be this month’s Open Book: Toronto Writer-in-Residence. My third book of poetry (The Polymers) has just been published and I plan to share with you some of the adventures associated with launching it. If you are in Waterloo this Thursday April 5th come and see me at the “Can Lit Kicks Ass” readings series http://canlitkicksass.blogspot...

As you may be able to tell from the titles of my books, I am deeply interested in intersections between poetry and science and I want to share with you different facets of that interest over the coming weeks. Given the immense role that science plays in our culture as an ostensible arbiter of truth and legitimacy, I think it is imperative for artists to pay close attention to science and to interact with its assumptions and methodologies.

I feel that my Open Book blogging begins on an auspicious note: the office of the Information Commissioner of Canada has just announced that she will investigate allegations that the federal government has been preventing its own scientists from presenting and publishing their research (research we all pay for and benefit from). Inhibiting the free exchange of scientific research does immense damage to the intellectual climate of this country. As citizens, but particularly as artists, we should all be concerned about any government attempts to muzzle our scientists.

The views expressed in the Writer-in-Residence blogs are those held by the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of Open Book: Toronto.
