Trillium Book Awards Author Reading 2015

"C'mon, sweetheart, talk dirty to me..."

No explicit language warning required this time.

I'm doing another reading soon, in just over 3 weeks at a great little bar called The Painted Lady. Of course I'm already nervous but, as usual, my strategy is to rehearse the pants off the stuff and draw inspiration from all those who stand on the stage behind me while I perform.

I mean my beloved dead and my beloved living, my favorite authors, painters, dancers, musicians, photographers and so on, all the free-range boho lunatics I adore, both infamous and obscure. I feel like I represent them and must not let down the side.

Then there's the audience. The performer has a daunting responsibility. The audience is giving the performer the most valuable thing they'll ever own - their time. They are giving up an hour or two hours they will never ever get back. I recently attended a comedy show and the performers literally begged the audience for laughs, for applause, for reaction, for something anything please!

It was beyond pathetic - like the cliched loser guy begging a girl for sex. DO NOT beg the audience, they owe you nothing. It is the performer who enters the arrangement at a deficit. The audience have given up their time and attention, now you must give them something worthy in return.

The title of the reading, "C'mon, sweetheart, talk dirty me...", is a quote from a character in my novel, Mount Royal, which is coming out sometime soon, according to the publisher, Tightrope Books. Okay, I'm being snarky cuz I'm impatient. They're great at Tightrope - really hard working and wonderful and I know they have their sked and so on but like any other big-headed writer, I figure I should be published like yesterday.

All right, so here's poster/details. Perhaps we'll see you there:
