Always Now; Always Now, Volume Two; Always Now, Volume Three by Margaret Avison

Porcupine’s Quill, 2003, 2004, 2005

As George Bowering describes her, Avison is “the best poet we have had.” Think of the title of her collected works: always now. In two words, she draws the reader into one of the great puzzles of mortality and consciousness, of what we perhaps tritely refer to as ‘the human condition.’ Her poem written almost fifty years ago, “The Swimmer’s Moment,” is so fine, terse, haunting, provocative and elusive, the words slip off the page and into the mind to become part of you, the reader, reading. Avison is the most difficult accessible poet, or the most accessible difficult poet, to have published in Canada, perhaps anywhere.
