The Double Hook

McClelland & Stewart

Canada’s best contribution to High Modernism, this canonical novel begins with a murder victim returning to the scene of the crime and haunting a paralyzed community into confronting life. Watson, for this book, has been called Canada’s Faulkner, Canada’s T.S. Eliot, Canada’s Wyndham Lewis. It has puzzled and amazed and inspired readers since it was published (incidentally, it was the book that lit a fire under a young bpNichol). You won’t solve it with one read, nor with a dozen, — but you might very well read it a dozen times. (George Bowering thinks it would make a great film. I think it would make an incredible graphic novel.)
