He Drown She in the Sea

McClelland and Stewart, 2006

Mootoo always manages to make a tapestry of the conflicted cultures of her characters. In this case, the cool blues and greens of the Rainforest stand in relief beside heat and decay in the Caribbean. He and she, hot and cold, yin and yang are woven in a seamless narrative that builds to a flawed redemption. This is a broken hallelujah in a world that fears compromise. Mootoo builds that world beautifully, in carefully orchestrated detail and meaningful dialogue.
