The Irrationalist by Suzanne Buffam

House of Anansi Press, 2010

There’s a series of poems in this book called “Little Commentaries.” They are short poems, with titles like “On Romanticism,” “On First Lines,” and “On Ghosts V. Zombies.” Sometimes, the poems contain the life-lesson quality of the aphorism, only without the off-putting moral edge. Buffam displays a Jamesian pragmatist wit, wherein moral absolutes give way to the situational exigencies. (Also, Buffam’s the master of the tangential anecdote; her poems are filled with them.)
