A sassy fun coming-of-age story with a hard-drinking and independent female protagonist. We follow nineteen-year-old Kate up and down the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway system of locks and ports as she works the summer of 1981 as a porter on freighters. The writing is vibrant and full, and catches the cadence and feel of sailor life. "There is a way of talking on water just like there was a way of walking. She could already feel it working on her tongue, like rough poetry...."
