Dear Readers,

December highlights from Open Book: Toronto:

Toronto poet Karen Shenfeld is Open Book's December 2009 Writer in Residence. She is the author of The Law of Return (Guernica Editions, 1999) and The Fertile Crescent (Guernica Editions, 2005). Visit Karen's Writer-in-Residence page to read her blog and her Ten Questions with Open Book and to peruse her reading and website recommendations.

Open Book and Cormorant Books are giving away a copy of City of Words: Toronto Through Her Writers' Eyes, a collection of excerpts about Toronto from writers such as Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and Earle Birney, accompanied by stunning original photographs by Kevin Robbins. The book's editor, Sarah Elton, tells Open Book some of her favourite things about Toronto. What are yours? List one of your Toronto favourites in the comment space below Sarah's list, and your name will be entered in a draw for a copy of City of Words. The contest ends on December 18th.

On Thursday, December 3rd, Ben McNally and his partner Lynn Thompson presented their choices for the top 45 books of the season in 45 minutes. It's a handy guide to some of the best fiction and non-fiction of the season. Read it here. Monique Mathew covered the event for Open Book.

The November Top Ten lists of bestselling books by Canadian authors are in. Visit our Around Town page to see what titles readers are picking up at Bakka Phoenix, Ben McNally Books, The Book Mark and Toronto Women's Bookstore.
