Acclaimed poets Barry Dempster and Carolyn Smart read from their latest collections of poetry.

ABOUT:

Barry Dempster is the author of two volumes of short stories, a novel, a children’s book, and nine previous collections of poetry, the most recent of which, The Burning Alphabet (Brick Books), won the 2006 Canadian Authors’ Association Jack Chalmers Award and was nominated for the 2005 Governor General’s Award for Poetry. Born and raised in Toronto, he presently lives in Holland Landing, Ontario, where he runs a film series, two book clubs and a writing group.

Carolyn Smart's memoir At The End of The Day won first prize in the CBC Literary Contest (Personal Essay Category) in 1993; the full memoir was published by Penumbra Press in 2001. Her poems have appeared in over 100 magazines and anthologies.

She has taught Creative Writing in workshops as well as on-line for Writers in Electronic Residence, and since 1989 has been in charge of the Creative Writing Program at Queen’s University. She is the founder of the Bronwen Wallace RBC Award for Emerging Writers. She lives north of Kingston, Ontario.
