Details

This workshop, presented by the Toronto New School of Writing, will be a group experience and discussion surrounding Chantal Neveu’s book Coït, as translated by Angela Carr. As a text, both in French and in English, Coït is built out of nine different “tubes” that represent nine difference spaces of language — localities where we talk, we walk, we write, we move.

Writer and interdisciplinary artist Neveu will lead a collective experiment to “ear” the words, to “ear” the book and to “move” a text into a performance that is intended to create a new linguistic “stage.” This will be a spacial experience of a text from the inside, to create a walking-reading, or even a dance-reading, and a unique poly-vocal performance.

Following the group performance of Coït, students will have the opportunity to discuss the experience with Neveu, particularly in relation to their own writing (or other creative) practice.

Participants will:

  • Learn about new Quebecois writing in translation
  • Discover new ways to experience a text in a collaborative environment
  • Learn about poetry performance that is not “spoken word”
  • Consider spacial aspects of language beyond the limits of the page
  • Consider language as a living fluctuating and social entity
  • Learn about the relationship between writing and the body

Cost: $30
