Photos! The Third Annual Totstock
Small Print Toronto once again joined forces with The Little Paper and Rooster Studios to stage the third annual Totstock, in Sorauren Park on Sunday June 21. About 4,000 people turned out for this year’s celebration of kid-friendly independent culture, featuring leading authors, bands, food and activities like "Build A Graffiti City."
Master percussionist and storyteller Njacko Backo extolled the crowd of wee ones at The Small Print Story Tent to "shake what your mamas gave you." Illustrator Brenda Clark donated her original drawing of Franklin the Turtle to a raffle in support of The West End Food Coop. Bellwoods Trinity backed up Chris Reed’s rendition of Pete-the-Cat by Eric Litwin. Authors Frank Viva, Monica Kulling, Rina Singh, Marthe Jocelyn, Heather Hartt Sussman and Ninja Cowboy Bear duo David Bruins and Hilary Leung regaled the audience. And Winnie-the-Pooh made an appearance, following an original song by Don Kerr & The Heffalumps and a reading from House At Pooh Corner by Natalie Kertes.
Master of ceremonies Brent Bambury of CBC Radio’s “Day Six” welcomed such bands as Polaris Prize Long List nominees Hooded Fang and the ‘dust bowl roots” acts HOTCHA! to the Main Stage. Given that Totstock is a tribute to both local producers and the next generation, it is fitting that the live performances were powered this year by the Sound Cycle project; an initiative of local Afro-jazz band Mr Something Something, which captures electricity generated by cyclists and stores it for future use in batteries.
