Dear Readers,

Open Book: Toronto's Winter Magazine is online. This season, our popular 48-Hour-Interview features McArthur & Company Publisher Kim McArthur and Quill & Quire Editor Derek Weiler. Love hockey and literature? So do Sharon Harris and other members of The Good Times Hockey League of the Arts. Read about writers on ice in her article, "The Best Game on the Page." In "The Girls' Club," Stacey May Fowles talks to three emerging authors about their new books and what it's like to be a young female writer in Canada. This issue's excerpt is an exquisitely illustrated and magical story called "The Nameless Holiday" from award-winning author and artist Shaun Tan's latest book, Tales from Outer Suburbia (Tundra Books).

Interested in writing for Open Book? If so, we'd love to hear from you. We're accepting submissions for the Open Book Magazine and for Toronto Profiles, and we're also interested in hearing about other ideas for the site. Visit the website for submission guidelines.

Kathy Kacer, Open Book's December Writer in Residence, has been blogging about writing styles, a trip to L.A., young authors, an inspiring book and many other topics. She's available to answer your questions, so send your emails to writer@openbooktoronto.com or post them directly onto her blog.

Episode 2 of Open Book's exclusive series, Type, is up on the Around Town page. Type is a series of "co-interviews" where authors are paired with creative people in other fields of art and culture such as fashion, art, culinary arts, music, film/TV, theatre, dance and more. In this episode, Derek McCormack (author of The Show That Smells, ECW Press) and Anwar Mukhayesh (from HGTV's The Designer Guys) interview each other about the inspiration behind their art.

TINARS for Tots got the holiday season rolling on December 6 with their Extravagant Holiday Bonanza. Kids and their parents got to hang out at the Gladstone Hotel to see Clayton Hanmer (Super A-maze-ing Year of Crazy Comics, Owl Kids), Ruth Ohi (Chicken, Pig, Cow, Annick Press) and Zach Wells and Rachel Lebowitz (Anything But Hank, Biblioasis). The event was hosted by Claudia Dey (Stunt, Coach House Books). Sharon Harris photographed it for Open Book. You can check out the pictures in The Scene section of Around Town.

Writer Monique Mathew also attended a TINARS event this month for Open Book. The launch for Shani Mootoo's latest novel, Valmiki's Daughter (House of Anansi Press) was on December 2 and featured Mootoo in conversation with Shyam Selvadurai (Swimming in the Monsoon Sea, McClelland & Stewart). Read Monique's coverage here.

Our latest Ten Questions interviews are with authors Judy Andrekson (Fosta: Marathon Master, Tundra Books), Cary Fagan (Ten Lessons for Kaspar Snit, Tundra Books), Jessica Warner (The Day George Bush Stopped Drinking, McClelland and Stewart), Mireille Levert (The Princess Who Had Almost Everything, Tundra Books) and Andrew Westoll (The Riverbones, McClelland & Stewart). Also new on the website is an Annick podcast with Laurie Coulter, author of Cowboys and Coffin-Makers.
