John Scully, event coverage, event photos and more

Dear Readers,

Open Book: Toronto is thrilled to welcome John Scully as our August Writer in Residence. A freelance writer, reporter and producer, John has covered stories in seventy countries for major international and current affairs organizations. His book, Am I Dead Yet? A Journalist's Perspective on Terrorism, was published in spring 2008 by Fitzhenry and Whiteside.

Visit John's WIR page to read his first blog entry, an account of a flawed phlebotomy that led to a hair-raising call from his family doctor. You can also peruse his recommended websites and books lists and read his interview with Open Book.

Toronto writer Monique Mathew covered the Scream in High Park for Open Book. Read Monique's article about the Scream's mainstage event, "an evening of stellar programming, set against the backdrop of trees and a darkening sky," on Open Book's news page. You'll also want to check out David Waldman's photos of the performers and audience at the Scream.

Did you know that "Food systems operate in much the same way as the body's circulatory system, nature's ecosystems, the educational system, the solar system, or the capitalist system, where each part is most deeply understood in relation to the whole"? Between The Lines' biweekly Dose of No-Nonsense will help you understand world food systems and introduce you, in small samplings, to The No-Nonsense Guide to World Food by Wayne Roberts, as well as other guides from BTL's No-Nonsense series.
