Trillium Book Awards Author Reading 2015

May at Open Book

Share |

Dear Readers,

Hello! Some May highlights for you.

Pamela Mordecai
The amazing Pamela Mordecai is our Writer in Residence for May. Her first poem was written when she was nine, about a hurricane that hit the island of Jamaica in that year. She was born and grew up there, “going to the nuns” at age four and leaving them at age twenty-one.

A bit of a hurricane herself, she has been a teacher, a trainer of teachers, a TV host, a sort of accountant, a writer-researcher, an editor, a book packager and a publisher. A prolific anthologist with a special interest in the writing of Caribbean women, she has edited groundbreaking anthologies including Jamaica Woman (with Mervyn Morris) and Her True-True Name (with Betty Wilson). Pam has also published sixteen textbooks, four collections of poetry, and five books (poetry and stories) for children, and a volume of short stories, Pink Icing and Other Stories (Insomniac Press).

Visit Pam’s author page and blog to read her thoughts on Toronto, a duppy story and a taste of summer with musings on coconut ice and shave ice.

Clayton Hanmer and Whazamo!
Also on in May, WHAZAMO! Ontario Graphic Novel Month. Whazamo! is an online comics celebration curated by Vepo Studios for Open Book, created to showcase the talented graphic novelists and illustrators published by the Ontario publishers, as well as draw attention to the new stars of the Canadian graphic novel and comic book scene.

Keep checking in: Whazamo! features fresh weekly updates including videos (see the latest, Making a Softer World with Joey Comeau, Emily Horne and Ryan North); comics for younger-readers and web-comics; profiles of creators (thus far, Evan Munday, Ashley Spires, Kid Koala and Troy Little); feature articles; and a Cartoonist-In-Residence, the incredible Clayton Hanmer (you can find his very fun page here).
