25th Annual The Word on the Street Connected Book Lovers and Authors

On Sunday, September 21, Queen's Park was closed to traffic for the 25th annual The Word on the Street festival. Over 150 authors attended to read from and discuss their most recent work. The festival also took place simultaneously in Halifax, Lethbridge and Saskatoon (as well as Kitchener on the previous day, September 20). Heavy rain in the morning threatened the Toronto festival, but the skies soon cleared and Torontonians of all stripes arrived in droves to catch readings, buy books and have them signed by authors, participate in interactive children's programming and enjoy the diverse food offerings.

Open Book: Toronto attended the Vibrant Voices of Ontario tent, which highlighted the amazing books of all genres being written and published in our province. Readers included Carrie Snyder, Krista Foss, Lynn Thomson, Mark Sakamoto, Tasneem Jamal, Claire Cameron, Gordon Henderson, (past Open Book writer-in-residence) Kim Moritsugu, Catherine Gildiner, Heather A. Clark and more. Our own Becky Toyne, an Open Book columnist, served as host and interviewer for the first half of the day before handing the microphone over to writer James Grainger.

We were also proud that our September 2014 writer-in-residence, Sandra Ridley, appeared in the New Narratives tent, which focused on innovative and avant-garde literature, hosted by Julie Baldassi, a staff writer at Quill & Quire magazine and Walrus magazine fiction editor Nick Mount.

You can still check out our The Word on the Street interview series with each of Catherine Gildiner, Carrie Snyder, Kim Moritsugu and Heather A. Clark.

Next year, The Word on the Street will move to the Harbourfront Centre on Queens Quay, launching a partnership with the International Festival of Authors. Stay tuned for 2015!
