Anakena Schofield

On Wednesday evening, Vancouver-based author Anakana Schofield was announced the winner of the $7,500 Amazon.ca First Novel Award at a ceremony in Toronto. Her novel, Malarky, is the story of an Irish woman struggling to come to terms with her son's homosexuality and her own sexual desire.

Stuart Woods, head judge and editor of Quill & Quire, called Malarky (published by Biblioasis) "a bold first novel from an author whose prose hums with electric wit and linguistic daring."

Schofield's novel was selected from a shortlist of four other Canadian debuts, including Y by Marjorie Celona (Hamish Hamilton Canada), The Rest Is Silence by Scott Fotheringham (Goose Lane Editions), People Park by Pasha Malla (House of Anansi Press) and Ru by Kim Thúy (Random House Canada). Each of the other finalists has won a $750 Amazon gift card.
