Randi Druzin

Randi Druzin knows that Canadians love their goalies. In Between the Pipes: A Revealing Look at Hockey’s Legendary Goalies (Greystone Books), she delves into the careers and lives of some of the NHL's greatest and most intriguing goaltenders, from Jacques Plante to Glenn Hall and many others. She goes behind the mask to relate some of the oddest habits, quirkiest traits and most surprising anecdotes. A great read (and gift!) for hockey lovers and anyone who has served a shift of their own in goal, Between the Pipes is a great addition to Canadian hockey literature.

Today we welcome Randi as she takes on our Dirty Dozen series, an unorthodox interview that asks authors to share twelve unexpected facts about themselves. Randi gives us twelve terrific ones, from guinea pig guilt to Van Halen disappointment.

  1. I don’t like hiking but have hiked along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and spent days climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I can’t explain it.
  2. I have a great memory for dates. For example, I still remember the birthday of the boy I had a crush on in Grade 4.
  3. I was responsible for the death of my guinea pig, whom my brothers and I loved very much. Decades later, I still feel badly about it.
  4. When I was 18 years old, I invited Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth to my graduation formal. I sent him a long letter and all I got in return was a “Roth ’n Roll” button. I never wore it.
  5. I’m fascinated by the Second World War and read about it almost obsessively. Even many of the fiction books I read are set in that era. Czarist Russia places a distant second in terms of what interests me.
  6. I don’t like beer. I lived in the beer-drinking capital of the world, the Czech Republic, for five years and didn’t drink more than a stein in total.
  7. I’m terrible with numbers. I can barely balance my bank statement.
  8. People magazine is a guilty pleasure.
  9. Raw cookie dough is another guilty pleasure.
  10. Despite my best efforts, I don’t like opera.
  11. I can recite almost every line in the movie, Gone with the Wind.
  12. I love stormy weather. Very dramatic!
