Congratulations go out to Jen Neale who won the $5,000 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers for her short-story “Elk-Headed Man.” The award, named in memory of writer and mentor Bronwen Wallace, honours emerging writers under the age of 35 who are currently unpublished in book form. The 28-year-old Vancouverite’s story was selected from 110 submissions.

This year’s jurors, Alexander MacLeod, Johanna Skibsrud and Madeleine Thien said Jen’s story “has it all: pure imaginative power, sharp humour, emotional honesty and real insight.”

Two finalists received $1000 each for their submissions: Vancouver writer Dina Del Bucchia for her story “Under the ‘I’” and Toronto writer Kathy Friedman “At the Bottom of the Garden.”

The awards ceremony was held at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music and was hosted by previous prize-winner, novelist Alyssa York.

The winning stories are available for free download exclusively on Apple’s iBookstore.
