NOW HEAR THIS! LAUNCHES S.W.A.T. RESIDENCY PROGRAM

NOW HEAR THIS!, the literacy outreach arm of the Descant Arts & Letters Foundation, is preparing to launch year five of its amazing in-schools writing program. The Students, Writers and Teachers (S.W.A.T.) Creative Residencies Program is the only ongoing writers-in-schools program in Toronto. Over the five years since its inauguration in 2005, S.W.A.T. has engaged over 5000 Toronto high school students in creative writing projects led by professional writers.

NOW HEAR THIS! partners these writers with English teachers in high school classrooms across the city of Toronto for 10 weeks each year to lead creative writing residencies in the classroom. These residencies serve to develop core literacy skills, personal expression, confidence and creative innovation. The writing produced by student participants in the S.W.A.T. Program is then published in beautiful, professionally illustrated, perfect-bound anthologies each year.

This year, S.W.A.T. will officially launch in 12 Toronto Catholic District School Board high schools throughout the week of February 28-March 4 2011, with 12 writers in 36 different classes. The 2011 edition of S.W.A.T. seems destined for success with talented returning writers Devon Code, Elisabeth de Mariaffi, Colin Frizzell, Nic Labriola, Joseph Maviglia and Julia Tausch. They are joined by fantastic new faces Paul Carlucci, Roseanne Carrara, Ibi Kaslik, Tanis Rideout, Emma Roberts and Jacob Scheier.
