McArthur & Co., the brainchild of respected publishing veteran Kim McArthur, has announced its closure.

The 15-year old publishing house was home to many beloved Canadian and international writers, including Margaret Atwood for her children's titles, Maeve Binchy and Anna Porter.

From the McArthur & Co. website:

"In its first fourteen years, the company has had 75 bestsellers, 25 of them #1 bestsellers evenly split between Canadian and international authors. Its authors have been shortlisted for 25 Canadian awards and have won 7 of them."

Many industry organisations and individuals have spoken about their regret regarding McArthur & Co.'s closure, including the Writers' Union of Canada, whose Chair Dorris Heffron noted: “It’s alarming that yet another independent, Canadian-owned publisher is being shuttered... The number of options for writers in Canada continues to shrink, especially if one wants to place one’s book on a Canadian list.”

The closure has been attributed to financial difficulties. McArthur herself has partnered with film producer and entertainment lawyer Miron Blumental to open McArthur Blumental Creative Inc., a new literary and creative agency in Toronto. Her continued involvement in the industry, albeit in a different role, has been met with enthusiasm amongst writers and publishers.
