Fresh & Local: Your connection to Toronto's vibrant literary scene

Dear Readers,

July updates from Open Book: Toronto:

"You had an unhappy childhood." "You fantasize about a statue of yourself that pigeons stay away from out of respect." Do those statements apply to you? If so, you just might be a writer. Fraser Sutherland's "How to tell if you're a writer" quiz has quickly become one of the most popular items on Open Book. Visit his July Writer-in-Residence page to take the quiz and to read his many witty and wonderful blog entries, his answers to the Proust Questionnaire and his lists of recommended readings and websites.

As Open Book's Writer in Residence, Fraser Sutherland is available to answer your questions and respond to your comments. You can send Fraser an email to or post your queries directly to his blog.

Contest! Open Book and BookLand Press are giving away a copy of Fraser's latest book, The Philosophy of As If. Click here to find out how to enter your name in the draw.

The Great Canadian Writer's Craft interviews continue to dazzle us with their insightful questions and thoughtful answers. The latest interviews in the series are with Gregory Betts, Kateri Akiwenie-Damm, Rachel Zolf, Jay MillAr, Zachariah Wells and Jacob Scheier.

Open Book's most recent interviews are with a stellar group of authors: Rob Laidlaw, Len Gasparini and Anne Perdue.

The June 2011 Top Ten lists are in! See which Canadian books were the top sellers last month at four of Toronto's finest bookstores: Bakka Phoenix, Ben McNally Books, The Book Mark and Type Books (the Forest Hill store).

On June 29th, book lovers gathered at 918 Bathurst Street for The Book Bakery's Fund-Fair to enjoy carnival games, a celebrity author kissing booth, raffle prizes and... books! The evening featured writers Matthew Stadler, Andrew Kaufman, Pasha Malla and Tabatha Southey. Toronto photographer Anna Ross was there to cover the event for Open Book.
