Fresh & Local: Your connection to Toronto's vibrant literary scene

Dear Readers,

June updates from Open Book: Toronto:

We are thrilled that Jessica Westhead is Open Book's June Writer in Residence. Jessica is not only incredibly nice (but don't get her started on musicals), but she's also very funny and thoughtful. Read her posts on zines, eavesdropping, cruise ship magicians, the art of enjoyment, travels with her family, risk-taking behaviour and the Literary Death Match. You'll also want to visit her WIR page for her reading and website recommendations and her interview with Open Book (make sure you click on the link for Jessica's "Writerly Items"). You can send your questions and comments for Jessica to or post them directly to her blog.

After you read Jessica's blog, you're going to want to read her books. Enter your name in a draw for a copy of Jessica's latest book, And Also Sharks, and her first book, Pulpy & Midge. Click here for full details.

This spring, Toronto high-school students conducted interviews with some of Canada's finest poets. The interviews feature the savvy journalism of two Writer's Craft classes under the collaborative tutelage of teacher John Ouzas and poet a.rawlings. These incredibly smart interviews will be posted on The Great Canadian Writer's Craft page on Open Book in June and July 2011.

Read Open Book's interview with Jill Downie and enter to win one of three copies of her crime novel, Daggers and Men's Smiles.

Read the book, wear the shirt. Enter to win one of four copies of The Guilty Plea by Robert Rotenberg, plus a t-shirt featuring the book's cover on the front and back. Click here for full contest details.

Our latest author interviews are with a fantastic group of authors: Richard Scarsbrook, Ava Homa, Julia McCarthy, Brian Henderson, Nick Thran, Shane Rhodes, Jill Downie, Julie Booker, Alexis Troubetzkoy, Gregory Betts, Maureen McGowan and David Helwig.

In "Luminato and Illuminating the Review," the brilliant Becky Toyne discusses literary awards and festival lineups.

Reader Emily Martin takes on George Murray's popular Questionless Books Interview.

Shaun Smith rounds up "Internet curiosities from the book world" with his always fun Sunday Sundries column.
