Fresh & Local: Your connection to Toronto's vibrant literary scene

Dear Readers,

Happy early spring! We hope you're taking advantage of this unseasonably warm weather to head to your favourite outdoor reading spot with a good book. Here are some March updates from Open Book: Toronto.

THE OPEN BOOK MAGAZINE
New in the Open Book Magazine:

Every Monday in March, the Open Book Magazine will feature one of the four winning stories in Open Book: Ontario and IFOA Ontario's Write Across Ontario contest. Read the prize-winning stories by high school students Kathleen Chen and Jessica Kim.

Ashliegh Gehl's feature on Iain Reid takes us beyond writing and into the realm of Mini-Wheats, sports and memoirs.

Danielle Webster introduces us to the charm of Toronto bookstore Sellers & Newel, a new second-hand book dealer that stocks "many first editions and antiquarian books, including some rare editions of books by J.R.R. Tolkien."

Since late January, Open Book has been serializing a section of Brian Panhuyzen's brilliant novel, Night is a Shadow Cast By the World. We recently posted chapter 17, the last chapter in the section, and we are left gripped by suspense.

In celebration of the Trillium Book Award's 25th Anniversary, Open Book and the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) are presenting a special series of readings by past Trillium winners. On Wedensday, March 7, the first night of the series was held at the Gladstone Hotel. Guests enjoyed readings by Ian Brown, Wayson Choy, Austin Clarke, Anne Michaels, Nino Ricci, Jane Urquhart and Richard B. Wright. Rachel Harry hosted. Photographer Anna Ross was there to capture the event. Click here for the gallery. Find out about the upcoming Trillium 25 Readings here.

In the Magazine, you'll also find the lists of the Top Ten Canadian bestsellers from Bakka Phoenix, Ben McNally Books, Bryan Prince Bookseller, Northern Women's Bookstore and Type Books (the Forest Hill store).

CONTESTS
March Book Giveaway: Open Book and Dundurn Books are giving away three sets of CB Forrest's books, The Weight of Stones and Slow Recoil. Click here for details on how to enter your name in the draw.

Win a Kobo E-Reader with the Trillium 25th Anniversary Contest: Open Book invites readers to vote online for their favourite Trillium Award-winning book. Vote and you'll have a chance to win one of three Kobo eReaders!

Once the contest ends, we will announce the five titles that won the most votes. The OMDC will then have a celebrity panel read and review those five books and declare a winner. The panel and its choice, as well as the number-one choice by Open Book readers, will be revealed at a later date.
