Dear Readers,

As we move into the last week of September, it's time to get ready for the flurry of book-related activities that take place in October. The best way immerse yourself in a month full of literary events is to read, talk to writers, watch short films about CanLit, and attend every book event available. can help you with all of this fun.

There are so many new books to read, it can be hard to know where to begin. Why not pick up a book by a Canadian writer you haven't read? Every weekday on our website, we feature a book from one of Ontario's publishers, and our links page includes a list of publishers' sites that you can browse through.

If you're still not sure what to read, or just want discuss writing and reading, why not consult an expert? Our Writer In Residence for September is the amazing Todd Babiak, author of The Book of Stanley, The Garneau Block, and Chokehold. He's posted a list of reading suggestions and he's available to answer questions and respond to comments. Todd has been keeping a regular blog in which he discusses the recent publication of The Book Of Stanley, Shelagh Rogers, the Giller longlist, and the importance of writers hugging, amongst other topics. He's also attended a seminar with Robert McKee (of the famous Story Seminar), who told the audience that "the world is dying to read about Canada and watch Canadian films set in Canada." We couldn't agree more.

Open Book brings you films about reading in Canada in the Words With section of our site. Words With is a series of short films by award-winning filmmaker Matt Austin. Watch Brian Joseph Davis, Linda Spalding, Kristin Booth, Emily Schultz, RM Vaughan, Kari Skogland, and many other Canadians discuss what CanLit means to them. We will continue to post new films throughout September.

When filling your calendar for the next few weeks, browse through our events page for a list of upcoming literary events. Put a big circle around October 9 when and Open Book host Under The Covers: Bedtime Stories for Adults, an evening of readings at the Gladstone Hotel from 7-10 p.m. The upstairs rotunda of the Gladstone will be transformed into a come-hither boudoir and bedtime costumes are encouraged. Prepare to be deeply moved by bedside readings from Sean Dixon (The Girls Who Saw Everything), Jessica Westhead (Pulpy and Midge), and Zoe Whittall (Bottle Rocket Hearts).
