SHAUN SMITH'S SUNDAY SUNDRIES

Share |

A WEEKLY ROUNDUP OF INTERNET CURIOSITIES FROM THE BOOK WORLD

Is COCO anti-CANUCK?

I am devoting this week's SUNDRIES to just one subject that is near and dear to my heart, and stomach.

For the last week, with the help of many others in the Canadian culinary, bookselling and journalism industries, I have been working to raise awareness about a problematic new cookbook coming from Phaidon Press this fall.

The book is called COCO.

Here’s the publisher’s description: 100 Emerging Culinary Stars Chosen by 10 of the World’s Greatest Chefs – Curated by Ferran Adrià, Mario Batali, Shannon Bennet, Alain Ducasse, Fergus Henderson, Yoshihiro Murata, Gordon Ramsay, René Redzepi, Alice Waters, and Jacky Yu.

What’s the problem with COCO?

If you live in Canada, you can probably guess: The ten curators chose not to include any emerging Canadian chefs in the 100. That's right: there are no Canucks in COCO! (scroll down to see the full list)

But maybe it is not too late.

I have learned that, as of early last week, Phaidon was still waiting on confirmation of the book's final selection, it's 100th emerging chef. That is, only 99 chefs have been selected for the book.

We all know there are emerging Canadian chefs who deserve to be in that book. There has been a buzz of media activity in Canada about this over the last week, with promise of more to come. We now have some of Canada's top chefs signing a petition that will be sent to Phaidon.

We are asking YOU to join the campaign as well, by sending an email to Phaidon press. Visit my site to learn how.

Here are just a few of the top culinary Canucks who have already added their voices to the campaign:

SUSUR LEE, cookbook author and Executive Chef & Partner/Owner, Shang, New York; Madeline’s & Lee, Toronto

JAMIE KENNEDY, cookbook author and Executive Chef & Owner, Hank's, Gilead Café & Gardiner Café, Toronto

ROB FEENIE, cookbook author and Food Concepts Architect, Cactus Club, Vancouver

KAREN BARNABY, cookbook author and Executive Chef, The Fish House in Stanley Park, Vancouver
