SHAUN SMITH'S SUNDAY SUNDRIES

A WEEKLY ROUNDUP OF INTERNET CURIOSITIES FROM THE BOOK WORLD

Maps

Enjoy a selection of maps from Umberto Eco's The Book of Legendary Lands.

BEE

Here's a pretty fascinating interview with BEE, in which he talks about "generation Wuss", guerrilla movie making, lazy reading habits, the fraud of DFW, and other stuff.

Drinks

How much Jane Austen gin would it take to fill a booze-soaked Raymond Carver story?

Trains

Amtrak is reportedly gearing up a writer residency program. I enjoyed Adam Kirsch's take on why this might appeal: "Perhaps there is a certain charm, too, in the fact that the train is an obsolete mode of transportation, much as literature sometimes suspects that it is an obsolete form of communication."

Volumes

As a signed edition of Mein Kampf goes up for auction in Los Angeles, where it is expected to fetch $20K, Israel has gifted Tokyo with 300 books related to Anne Frank to replace vandalized volumes in its public libraries.

Margins

Amazon has released a list it says are the 100 books you must read to create a well-read life. Of course, coming from Amazon, we shouldn't be surprised that it is an utter crap proposition. These are probably just books they get high margins on. I mean, there are scads of books on the list I'd actually advise avoiding. And they seem to have arbitrarily included the mediocre or fashionable at the cost of genius. A splendid example of what happens when you hand care of the culture over to algorithms.

Furniture

It's been a while since I linked some groovy book shelves.
