Video of the Week: Kyo Maclear's Virginia Wolf Tackles Mental Health for Kids

Share |

Virginia Wolf (Kids Can Press) is an unusual children's book. Written by Kyo Maclear, it tells the story of Vanessa's sister, Virginia, who finds herself in a "wolfish mood"; a child-friendly metaphor for depression, with Virginia and Vanessa being inspired by Virginia Woolf and her older sister, the painter Vanessa Bell.

Brought to life by the beautiful artwork of Isabelle Arsenault, Virginia Wolf is a great book for parents and children to read together. Maclear succeeded in her aim to have the book "wear its origins and themes lightly"; indeed the book is tender and uplifting, with a positive message for readers of all ages.
